I never dreamed that making a few pens could turn into such an interesting
business! I have always liked working with wood. After finishing two
basements and making some furniture, I was ready to try something new.
A friend invited us to his home in Atlanta, Georgia for a visit. He asked
me to "bring some old clothes", as he wanted me to help fix up a few things
in his newly-completed workshop. He had just taken some woodworking
classes and had learned to "turn" wood on his new lathe. In a long weekend,
he taught me the basics of using a lathe and turning wood. He also showed
me how to make a pen by starting with a piece of scrap wood. I decided to
try some turning on my own when I returned home.
Upon returning home, I purchased a few new tools and started experimenting
with wood turning - first rounding 2x2s, then adding some fancy cuts and
grooves, sanding them down, etc. Then I decided to try pens. I was hooked!
Soon I started creating pens with different types of woods, acrylics, and
even stone.
I decided that this was a good hobby for me. When I took a couple of my
pens to show my friends and co-workers, everybody wanted to buy them!
It didn't take long before I started creating pencils and keychains, letter
openers and more, and selling them at craft shows. PEN-tastic was an
instant success!
Our current inventory continues to grow, adding more materials and styles.
Our current stock includes not only pens and pencils, but fountain pens,
keyrings (many different styles), CD tops, letter openers and more.
What started out as curiousity became a great hobby and business!
